You Won’t Get Far Alone | 3 Principles Coaching

You Won't Get Far Alone Ankush Jain

Something that coaches rarely talk about is the fact that coaching can feel like an incredibly lonely profession.

Whilst coaching is all about relationships and we can spend a lot of time in conversations with people, unlike other professions, we often aren’t spending a lot of time with our colleagues and peers.

One of the best investments I ever made was participating in Steve Chandler’s school which he ran for many years called the ACS – which stood for Advanced Client Systems. Now, whilst I joined the school three times to learn how to grow my coaching practice and attended once more as a guest speaker, one of the unexpected benefits of attending his school was the fantastic colleagues I met and connected with during that time.

Those connections and relationships were invaluable and even today, many years later, I interact and connect with some of the wonderful people I met in those years. These include incredible coaches like Karen Davis and Alex Mill (authors of the excellent book How to Get the Most Out of Coaching) or Melissa Ford (author of Living Service – for which I was asked to write the foreword) – and many others like Devon Bandison, Gary Mahler, and Chris Dorris, who are also all authors in their own right and extremely successful coaches.

Unlike other professions where we typically work for an organisation where we will meet colleagues on a regular basis, in coaching we have to create that for ourselves.

One of the visions that I had for the coaching school I have created was not only the content I’m going to share that’s going to help the coaches in the school but the opportunity to network with other fantastic coaches who are committed to seeing coaching as a profession and as a career. We recently did an exercise as we lead to the launch of the school where all the attendees wrote their bios. Not just any old bio, but one where it was an exercise in self-love and an opportunity for the attendees to come out of the closet and be as bold and big as they dared. As I read them I was blown away by the quality of people who are signed up for the school and this was only heightened when we met in person recently for our first in-person weekend.

If you’re a coach and you’re finding that you don’t have colleagues in your world that really have your back, who really want your best interest and who approach coaching in a similar way to you, I’d highly recommend that you find a way to create that in your own world. It will be a really worthwhile exercise.

P.S We put together the bios from everyone in the school into a single document. Please click on the link here and read it here. However, don’t read it and put anyone on a pedestal. Please read it to be inspired by everyone in the document and I encourage you to create your own bio and share it on social media. The world is not served by us playing small and dimming our light.
