What to Do When I Feel Overwhelmed at the Beginning of My Coaching Career?

What to Do When I Feel Overwhelmed at the Beginning of My Coaching Career? - Ankush Jain

If you’re feeling overwhelmed at the start of your coaching career, know that you’re not alone and what you’re feeling is normal. It’s not as clear a career path as some other careers, and it can often seem that everyone else is doing far better than you.

I find coaching to be a profession more than any other profession where colleagues and peers are willing to help and guide you so that you can be successful. There are so many people who have helped me get to where I am now. Some of them were in paid relationships, but many of them weren’t.

The thing that helped me stay on the path and not get too caught up in my thinking was having a coach who is very skilled in helping coaches build their careers. In my case, it was Steve Chandler who is now retiring at the end of this year. I’m so grateful for him because, in addition to coaching, he was also a wonderful mentor. He drew on his experience to let me know what direction I might want to move in and how normal I was feeling.

If you are not in a position to hire a coach, having some kind of structure and system will be helpful to you. I am biased, and I highly recommend the online self-study course that I created with Dr Mark Howard for any new coach who might be feeling overwhelmed. We created this course as something that we wish we had when we just started our coaching to give us a solid structure to so many different aspects of both the coaching practice and the coaching business.
