Sometimes people ask me:
“If anything, what would you do differently if you were starting your coaching business again?”
It’s always easy to look back with the benefit of hindsight and think I could have done this or that. But the truth is, I have learned many lessons along the way through the things that I’ve done that didn’t quite work out.
Sometimes I think the only thing that I could have done is hire a great coach who could have helped me grow my business earlier than I did. I ended up hiring Steve Chandler in August 2014 – about two years after I started training to be a coach. Often I’ve thought that if I’d hired him a year earlier it would have shaved off a lot of wasted time when I was trying to build my coaching practice without a coach.
However, perhaps even that’s not true.
It was in the first 2 years of my coaching without a coach that really showed me why trying to build a coaching practice without a coach was not going to work out for me.
Before I hired Steve I was being a good student in my coach training, I was getting 1-1 mentoring from Keith Blevens, I was taking a lot of action and putting time, effort and energy into building my coaching practice. Yet it was only when I hired a coach that the trajectory of my learning curve really changed and almost immediately after hiring Steve my business tangibly started to take off.
In the beginning, he helped me with simple changes like sorting out my calendar and looking for what activities I was spending my time on that resulted in more income flowing into my business.
I’ll be sharing more about this journey in my upcoming book for coaches, which I’m currently working on with my editor Chris Nelson. In the meantime, check out this video I did a few years ago with Liz Scott about starting as a coach.
