Treating Your Business as a Business | 3 Principles Coaching

Treating your business as a business

For years I would never admit (even to myself) that I was treating my coaching practice as a glorified hobby rather than a business.

What do I mean by that?

I mean that I didn’t do the things that I needed to do consistently to have my business thrive and grow as fast as it could have. Don’t get me wrong, my business did ok. I hid behind the story that I was seemingly making more money than a lot of my peers, that my revenue and profit were growing year on year and basked in the positive feedback from others.

When I asked my coach, Steve Chandler, to help me double my revenue, he helped me see past this blind spot. There is a great chapter in the book Creator by Steve Chandler where he talks about this. He mentions a grow light which is used to help plants grow. If you shine it on a plant it will grow. In the same way, Steve taught me that where I shone my conscious attention would lead to growth.

I had been doing that sporadically but now I could do it deliberately AND it was totally in line with my understanding of the 3 Principles. I didn’t need to take action on my business in line with what I was feeling at that particular moment. I could simply shine my light on creating conversations that would lead to clients.

Within two years I had reached my target of doubling my income. But more than that, I had changed my relationship with my business. In many ways, it felt like moving from being a teenager to an adult. Growing up in the best possible way. What I found was I didn’t need to work more hours, just more effectively. I didn’t need to spend time worrying or stressing but had less on my mind. I didn’t need to sacrifice family time for business growth but could do both.

I’m so excited for the coaches in my upcoming AJC coaching school to get to business. This is not a 3P coach training. This is a business school for coaches and I’m excited to see the ripples created in the months ahead as we ensure this is a real business investment with an ROI.

If you are ready to start treating your coaching practice as a business, the video below will help you with that. It’s a conversation I had years ago with Emma McDevitt about growing a coaching practice.
