One of the things I’ve noticed over the years is the incredible ability of humans to rationalise a misunderstanding.
A common way I’ve seen people doing this is through the process of convincing themselves that when they’re not taking action they didn’t want to do it anyways.
For example, if I speak to someone who is looking for some help to reach a goal, it’s likely that taking action will be an obvious requirement for them to achieve what they want.
But often what I’ll find is they will start getting into some circular thinking around whether they really wanted the goal in the first place because they seem to not be taking any action towards it.
Here’s the misunderstanding:
Not taking action isn’t an indication that you didn’t want to do something or shouldn’t do it. Not taking action is an indication that you’re not taking action. Full stop.
And yet the mind is so powerful we can use this backwards rationalisation to keep us stuck and stop us from moving forward.
To explain this further, below you’ll find a short clip I recorded with a former client of mine six or seven years ago about this very topic.
