Why would generosity be good for business? with Amir Karkouti – AJC 2024

Amir Kakout - Interview

Can we give freely even when we don’t have much?

One of my biggest takeaways from my recent conversation with Amir Karkouti for AJC 2024 was about the power of generosity—not just as a nice-to-have, but as a game-changer in both business and life. I was almost moved to tears several times in the conversation.

Amir’s story about his parents really struck me. Despite starting with almost nothing when they moved to the US, they always found a way to give back. They’d make extra food, not just for themselves but for neighbours and guests. It wasn’t something they should do, it was about a mindset of abundance, even in the toughest times.

Amir’s grandfather also played a huge role. Despite limited resources, he lived generously, and that ethos has clearly passed down through the generations. Amir is one of the most generous men I have known. It’s not just about transactions; it’s about building genuine connections and supporting others however you can. It reminded me of my own grandfather who passed away over 35 years ago. People still remember his generosity decades later.

Amir recently hired a business coach who insisted he give 20% of his income to charity. That was not just about the money, it was about cultivating a mindset that says, “I have more than enough to share.” I didn’t used to give a lot to charity because I felt like I didn’t have enough. This has changed and I encourage coaches in my school to give some % of their income to charity.

Here’s the thing that really resonated with me: Amir made it clear that generosity isn’t just a feel-good principle—it’s a way of being. When you operate from a place of giving, it transforms how you do business. People notice. They want to work with someone who cares not just about profit margins but about making a positive impact.

It was a wonderful reminder for me and I am so glad that we can dive deeper into this topic during Amir’s masterclass in the upcoming coaching school.

Success in business isn’t just about revenue and profit — it’s about the relationships you build and the difference you make in people’s lives. When you give freely, you open doors to new opportunities and build a reputation that money can’t buy.

Next time you’re thinking about your business strategy, consider BEing more generous than you’ve ever been. It’s not just good for your bottom line; it’s good for your soul and for those around you. Everyone wins.

If you haven’t watched yet, here’s my interview with Amir for AJC 2024.
