In coaching, impactful conversations are crucial. I’ve learned that it’s not just about talking with each other; it’s about creating a space where clients feel safe to bring their deepest challenges.
Early in my career, I realised that many of my clients, regardless of their level, felt insecure about being judged. They often brought surface-level issues to sessions, avoiding the real topics that matter.
One time, when I was coaching someone who was hesitant to dive deep, I encouraged her to bring the challenge she thought made her look bad, the one they feared I’d judge them for. It transformed the session. She opened up, and we had a real, meaningful conversation that led to significant breakthroughs. This wasn’t simply about the question I asked but also her feeling she could trust me to answer it honestly.
When inviting potential clients to a session, I’ve found it really helpful to frame the conversation as a coaching experience, not a sales call. I may say, “Bring the thing you’re most struggling with, the one you think makes you look bad.” An alternative could be, “What could we cover in our conversation that would be most helpful to you, right now?” This invitation encourages honesty and vulnerability, allowing us to tackle the real issues or challenges they face.
In my practice, I’ve found that offering coaching experience before discussing commitments to work together is invaluable. It allows potential clients to experience the value of coaching together firsthand and make an informed decision. This approach has helped me build a thriving coaching practice, where clients feel genuinely supported and understood.
The goal is to serve, not to sell. Whether you’re writing a message or having a conversation, focus on being present and authentic. This mindset not only enriches your coaching practice but also creates lasting, impactful relationships with your clients.
